About The National Energy Foundation (NEF)

The National Energy Foundation (NEF) is an independent charity based in Milton Keynes, which has been at the forefront of improving the use of energy in buildings since 1988. We aim to give people, organisations and government the knowledge, support and inspiration they need to understand, manage and reduce the use of energy in buildings.

NEF operates a hybrid working policy, which means that employees can work, remotely, from home (within the UK) on four out of five days. On the fifth day, employees are expected to work from NEF’s offices in Milton Keynes.

All roles within NEF start with an induction process and a six-month probation period.

SuperHomes & Energy advice project

SuperHomes is a project delivered by NEF which has a focus on whole house domestic retrofit. It is both a Network of Members and a Rating Scheme for private sector housing. All customers are encouraged to follow a retrofit journey that is aligned to PAS2035 (Retrofitting dwellings for improved energy efficiency), starting with a Whole House Retrofit Plan (WHRP) – also known as a medium-term improvement plan – produced by a Retrofit Coordinator.

Due to our recent success in securing new funding for a local demonstration project, NEF are looking to recruit two Retrofit Assessors to support our existing Retrofit Coordinators in the delivery of a significant number of free retrofit option appraisals. The appraisals will act as initial advice to homeowners as to how they could improve domestic energy efficiency. The appraisals will follow a new template and will essentially be a slimmed down version of a full medium-term improvement plan, which could later be developed into a full retrofit PAS 2035 plan if required. The slimmed down version is referred to herein as a ‘lite’ plan.

The project will be focused in two counties, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, but may in future be expanded to other regions in the UK.

Role Summary

The Retrofit Assessors will each work closely with and support an existing inhouse Retrofit Coordinator to deliver a high volume of ‘lite’ retrofit plans. The Assessors will carry out the majority of the home surveys, input data into SAP energy modelling, populate the ‘lite’ plan template including making recommendations on retrofit options. The Coordinator will be responsible for checking and quality assuring the ‘lite’ plans before they are issued to customers.

You will also provide technical advice and guidance to customers and members of NEF staff. This will from time to time include online and in person events where you will represent NEF.

Candidates applying for this role must be both an accredited Retrofit Assessor (level 4) and Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA).

Key Responsibilities

  • Carrying out home surveys in line with the provisions and role requirements for Retrofit Assessors under PAS 2035.
  • To undertake energy modelling using a SAP software model and interpreting EPC baseline, incremental improvements and post retrofit ratings.

  • Assist with signing customers up to the local retrofit advice service and participate in marketing activity.
  • Advising customers on next steps with their retrofit journey and with a view to measures being installed.
  • Advising and signposting customers to available capital grant funding support for retrofit measures and making referrals to NEF colleagues to take applications forward.
  • Connecting customers with retrofit installers from NEF’s supplier network where appropriate.
  • Offer general support services to the Project Manager and Coordinator as necessary for successful implementation and delivery of the project.
  • To represent NEF at events, to promote the charity, its projects and aims.
  • Work with a range of systems and processes, including relevant CRM systems and/or databases.
  • Keeping records up to date and progress reporting to the Project Manager.
